A DRAGON'S GUIDE TO THE CARE AND FEEDING OF HUMANS

Susan Denaker delivers a comedic tale of a dragon who learns she has a soft heart in this audiobook perfect for young listeners. Miss Drake is a dragon who has a new pet, the young human Winnie, who turns out to be quite a handful. Denaker mixes highbrow elegance with humor and heart to create the stiff Miss Drake. As the character becomes more endearing as the story goes on, Denaker's narration deftly reflects her change of heart. Young listeners will surely relate to the excitable Winnie as they revel in the adventures she has with her dragon.

Sixth grader Jordi Acosta starts to take an interest in activism when two issues become significant in his life. First, books are being banned at the school library, and second, an energy company wants to drill in Yaupon Creek Wildlife Refuge, where he volunteers with his mom, a wildlife biologist who tends to cryptids there. Adi Cabral narrates at a quick pace, with a slightly sassy edge. They bring a wealth of variety to their depictions of middle schooler Jordi and his friends, creating different voices, from impudent to nerdy and nasal. Several characters have Southern accents.

Samuel West gives a riveting performance of this thrilling, action-packed adventure. When scholar Irian Guinne is kidnapped, Christopher and Anya, along with Jacques the dragon and Ratwin the ratatoska, embark on an odyssey across the Glimouria Archipelago to collect various magical objects and ransom Irian’s release. Christopher is also trying to master his new ability to connect directly to the minds of magical creatures. West doesn’t have a youthful voice, but he’s still completely convincing as the young characters, and he deftly captures every moment of humor, fear, peril, and wonder. In his telling, a dangerous race becomes breathless and impossible to pause, and the themes of love, bravery, and kindness ring true.

      Simply marvelous. (Fantasy. 10-14)
