ART IS LIFE

ICONS AND ICONOCLASTS, VISIONARIES AND VIGILANTES, AND FLASHES OF HOPE IN THE NIGHT

Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic Jerry Saltz (HOW TO BE AN ARTIST) and narrator Mark Bramhall combine their considerable talents to present this eclectic collection of Saltz's writing from 1999 to 2021. From cave paintings and Renaissance masters to contemporary superstars and the marginalized misunderstood--this is an accessible exploration of the places, events, and personalities that influence the 21st-century art world. Saltz's distinct voice and unhurried pace create an intimate connection with listeners as he shares his critical observations and personal stories. Bramhall enriches the chapters he performs with an equally engaging narrative style that complements the author's tone and delivery. Overall, this is an enlightening and entertaining audio experience. Listeners should be ready to press pause and search for images of artists' works to enhance this inspiring listen.

Would your opinion of two identical portraits be the same if you knew that a sexual predator painted one of them? In this controversial audiobook, author and narrator Dixon argues that artwork is inseparable from its artist's actions. Dixon’s reading is crisp and convincing, never pedantic, and her examples range from Eminem and drill music to cave drawings and Picasso. She structures her audiobook around five categories: obscenity (distinguishing between offensiveness and immorality), criminality (whether art can make people commit crimes), oppression (the objectification of women, racist stereotypes, and the eroticization of sexual violence), malevolence (the inseparability of art from the artist), and cruelty (where the process of creating involves wrongdoing—for example, killing elephants for their tusks).

Often provocative and never boring, Depraved provides plenty of material for water cooler discussions.

Tilda Swinton is a joy to listen to in this homage to loneliness and paean for intimacy. Laing’s landmark work of unconventional art history proves to be as relevant as it was in 2016, if not more so, in an increasingly atomized, post-pandemic world where many, if not most, social interactions happen through our phones. Loneliness, in Laing’s eyes, is not a singular experience, and certainly not a moral failing, but a fact of human nature. Swinton’s clean, polished tone is subtly compassionate to the very real, relatable sufferings of the profiled urbanite artists. This account of our saddest human state is full of rich, hopeful detail.

Swinton’s magnetic performance of this 10th anniversary edition adds meaningfully to the legacy of Laing’s magnum opus.
