It begins with a wedding. Thérèse Plummer depicts the politically motivated marriage between tech savvy Misery Lark, daughter of an influential Vampyre councilman, and Lowe Moreland, newly ascended Were Alpha. The nuptials will have to create mutual trust between the lead characters in order for them to find Misery's missing friend, uncover sinister plots, and figure out what they mean to each other. Plummer goes above and beyond acting out internal and spoken dialogue by enhancing the script with sighs, chuckles, groans, and strained vocalizations. Her character voices flow from deeply masculine to the nasal timbre of a stuffy child. Will Damron's one-sentence perspectives at the beginning of each chapter are beautifully juxtaposed with Plummer's femininity.

Frangione is the longtime narrator of this series, and his familiarity with it adds to the listening experience.
Narrator Jim Frangione once again draws listeners into Ward's world, where humans coexist with vampires (unbeknownst to the humans). The vampires are being hunted by creatures known as Lessers. Vampire Allhan has an unexpected encounter with Princess Dennesha. Passion flares between them, but both are struggling with secrets: Frangione conveys Dennesha’s frustration with her destiny, and he fully expresses Allhan’s agony as he’s torn between trying to protect his sister and betraying his adopted family. The vampire race is protected by The Brotherhood, and Frangione perfectly brings the brothers to life.

Sentimental and heartfelt.
Megan Wicks and Robert Hatchet convey all the emotions in this small-town contemporary romance with a slight touch of the supernatural. Clarke Cartwright has the ability to see and talk to ghosts—including the ghost of her childhood crush’s father, who wants her to pass on a message. Leith Wilkes is preparing to take over the family farm when he learns of a troublesome clause in his inheritance. Wicks’ warm, alluring tone lets listeners understand Clarke’s inner turmoil and conflict. Hatchet makes Leith easy to love, giving him an affable, rich timbre and portraying his affection and fervor. The duet narration shines during emotional conversations and intimate moments.
