Artemis Fowl is headed to the small screen, Deadline reports.
Disney has greenlighted an animated series based on Eoin Colfer’s series of children’s fantasy novels. The series, which will feature Colfer as an executive producer, is expected to air on the Disney Channel and Disney+.
Colfer’s series launched in 2001 with Artemis Fowl, which introduced young readers to the 12-year-old title character, initially a villain who kidnaps an elf, Holly Short. In the ensuing novels, he becomes something of a hero, working with Holly to protect the world from evildoers. A spinoff series, The Fowl Twins, focused on Artemis’ younger brothers, launched in 2019.
Artemis Fowl was adapted into a critically reviled 2020 film directed by Kenneth Branagh, starring Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, and Josh Gad. A stage musical based on the books is currently in development.
Colfer told Deadline, “I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the Artemis Fowl animation on screen. Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands.”
Disney Kids & Family President Ayo Davis said, “For more than two decades, Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl books have captivated readers around the world with unforgettable characters, imaginative world-building, and gripping adventures. Bringing this beloved franchise to life as an animated series gives us the opportunity to introduce a new generation to Artemis’ world while honoring the longtime fans who have cherished these stories for years.”
